Low or Tall Garden Bollard Lights – How to Choose the Right Height

A garden bollard light should do more than complement the overall design of your outdoor space—it should also provide effective illumination after dark. The ideal height depends on where it will be installed. A narrow garden path, a driveway, and a seating area each require a different lighting solution. A bollard that is too low may not provide enough light, while one that is too tall can overwhelm the surrounding landscape. In this guide, we explain what to consider when choosing the right height and when a low or tall garden bollard light is the better option.

Garden Bollard Lights: Key Information

  • Low garden bollard lights (up to approximately 40 cm / 16 in. tall) are ideal for illuminating garden paths, flower beds, and creating subtle decorative lighting.
  • Tall garden bollard lights and post lights, typically 150 cm / 59 in. or higher, are well suited for entrances, wider walkways, and open areas around the property.
  • The right height depends on the installation location, the width of the pathway, the size of the garden, and the purpose of the lighting.
  • Sleek, minimalist bollard lights usually complement modern homes, while decorative post lights are often a better match for traditional architecture.
  • In addition to height, it's important to consider the light source, IP protection rating, housing material, and installation method when choosing an outdoor light.

What Determines the Right Height for a Garden Bollard Light?

The height of a garden bollard light should be chosen not only to match the style of the fixture but, more importantly, to suit its installation location and intended purpose. A narrow garden path, a driveway, and the area around the front entrance each require a different lighting solution.

Before making your purchase, consider these key factors.

Installation Location: Pathways, Driveways, and Entrances

The installation location has the greatest influence on the ideal height of a garden bollard light. Along pathways, the light should guide the way by illuminating the walking surface. Near a driveway, it can also provide light for the garage entrance, while at the front entrance it should highlight the approach to the door and create a welcoming atmosphere.

  • Along a narrow garden path, a low bollard light—typically up to 40 cm (16 in.) tall—is usually sufficient. It clearly defines the path while remaining unobtrusive, allowing plants and flower beds to remain the focal point. A good example is the modern CUBE CB-330 AL which stands 33 cm (13 in.) tall and is well suited for pathways bordered by low vegetation.
  • For a driveway, first consider whether the lighting is intended simply to mark the driving route or also to enhance the appearance of the space. In most cases, bollard lights between 60 and 110 cm (24–43 in.) high work well. Alternatively, recessed driveway lights, provide effective ground-level illumination without taking up additional space.
  • Near the front entrance, a taller garden bollard light, around 150 cm (59 in.) high, can be an excellent choice. For the best effect, position it at the end of the pathway or close to the entrance area rather than directly beside the front door. A bollard light works well as decorative and supplementary lighting, while an outdoor wall light, such as a wall-mounted fixture, is better suited for illuminating the doorstep, steps, and entrance door.

Garden Size

The size of your property also plays an important role in choosing the right height for a garden bollard light. In smaller gardens, low or medium-height fixtures usually create a more balanced look without overwhelming the space. On larger properties with long pathways or wide driveways, taller bollard lights appear more proportional and provide better visibility after dark.

As a general rule, the larger the outdoor space and the wider the paved areas, the more naturally a taller fixture will fit into the landscape. In a compact garden, however, an overly tall bollard light can dominate the planting and disrupt the overall balance of the design.

Pathway Width

The wider the paved area, the greater the lighting coverage required. Along a narrow pathway, a low bollard light is usually sufficient to illuminate the walking surface close to the ground. For a wide entrance path or driveway, a taller bollard light is often the better choice, as it can distribute light more evenly across a larger area.

Purpose of the Lighting

Before choosing the height of a garden bollard light, consider the purpose of the lighting. Will it simply define the edge of a pathway, or should it also illuminate the entrance, patio, or another part of the garden?

If the light is intended only to mark a garden path, highlight a flower bed, or provide subtle ground-level illumination, a low bollard light is usually sufficient. A taller model is a better choice when the light needs to cover a larger area, such as a wide driveway, the approach to the house, or part of an outdoor seating area.

How to Choose the Right Bollard Light Height for Your Garden Style

The height of a garden bollard light should complement not only its installation location but also the architectural style of your home, fencing, and surrounding landscape. Sleek, minimalist fixtures are often the best match for contemporary homes, while properties with brick façades, decorative entrances, or more traditional architecture are better suited to classic-style post lights.

Our collection includes both modern garden bollard lights and more decorative outdoor lighting designs. A great example of a classic-style fixture is the Cordoba II K 5002/3/TD.

Cordoba II K 5002/3/TD Outdoor Post Light

The light features a durable aluminum body, a polycarbonate diffuser, and stands 71 cm (28 in.) tall, making it well suited for pathways leading to the house, sidewalks, patios, and garden areas. This height offers a practical balance, providing effective illumination of the surrounding space without overwhelming the landscape.

What Else Should You Consider Before Buying a Garden Bollard Light?

In addition to height, there are several other factors worth considering, as they have a significant impact on the durability, performance, and ease of use of a garden bollard light.

  • Light source – A replaceable bulb gives you greater flexibility when choosing the brightness and colour temperature, and it can be easily replaced when needed. An integrated LED, on the other hand, offers excellent energy efficiency and requires minimal maintenance.
  • Light colour (colour temperature) – Warm white light (2700–3000 K) is ideal for gardens and outdoor seating areas, while neutral white (3500–4500 K) is a great choice for driveways, entrances, and modern façades. Very cool white light (above 5000 K) is rarely used in residential gardens, as it can create a harsh, overly technical appearance.
  • IP protection rating – For outdoor use, choose a fixture with a minimum rating of IP44. In areas exposed to heavy rain, moisture, or dirt, IP54 or IP65 provides better protection.
  • Housing material – Materials such as aluminum, stainless steel, and high-quality weather-resistant polymers offer excellent durability in outdoor conditions and help maintain the fixture's appearance for many years.
